Le bâtiment est construit entre 1807 et 1809 par Jean-Nicolas Trouille d'après les plans de Jean Tarbé de Vauxclairs, dans le but premier de renforcer la clôture de l'arsenal de Brest au niveau de l'anse de Pontaniou. Il combine les fonctions de pont et d'entrepôt affecté au stockage des matériaux de calfatage, et commande l'accès à l'arsenal depuis le quartier de Recouvrance et depuis la prison maritime de Pontaniou. L'édifice tire son nom des gargouilles à tête de félin ornant sa façade antérieure.Classement monument historique :
